12 Ways, Technique & Rhythm, Part 3

  A Reminder of Our List of 12:

1. To be open and refine your ability to listen.

2. To be mindful, inclusive and integrating your whole self.

3. To be aware of the musical meaning, in order to feel emotional connection to and fall in love with the music.

4. To be sculpting a beautiful, in-tune and consistent sound.

5. To be creating a technique that is flawless, easy, flowing, free and virtuosic.

6. To become a musician with rhythmic integrity and an organic sense of timing.

7. To understand and be considerate of all the markings and every clue that is in the music.

8. To be observant and become intimate with every detail of the phra-sing, from the smallest detail to the big picture and to learn how it relates to the style, and to the entire piece.

9. To be curious and discover the unknown mysteries and the spirit in the music that are waiting to be revealed by the composer and you.

10. To be playful, exploring and finding creative ways to enjoy and bring the music to life.

11. To be a player who is spirited, authentic, expressive, engaging and confident when performing.

12. To be developing your personal artistic stage presence.

 5. To be creating a technique that is flawless, easy, flowing, free and virtuosic.

What is Technique? A way of carrying out a particular task, especially the execution or performance of an artistic work..."

So what is the WAY you are executing your practice and playing?

We all spend a lot of time and effort on learning "the notes"... What if during this process we are as inclusive as possible at adding to this process a new ingredient as we practice and repeat aspects of the music we are practicing? So that we are "your job is to make it easy" as Jeanne Baxtresser would say to us, in this practice process. So in our efforts we are also finding the balance of ease. 

Finding the flow as we practice, in our technique, rhythm, breath, sound, body, mind. Expressing the technical aspects with freedom and virtuosity as well as considering the how to do this with accuracy, precision and as flawless as possible. This means including our whole self as we practice. 

And for most of us, this usually means that we repeat things in chunks, in small parts so that with each repetition we can add another way of our self and the music into our practice. 

So, to create technique in a meaningful way: 
we are always considering what is truly important musically and to our whole instrument, (your body/mind/spirit, to which you add the flute) in your practice and playing. 

6. To become a musician with rhythmic integrity and an organic sense of timing.

When we consider the importance of rhythm, as the structure upon which sound lives in and pulse as the heartbeat and life of rhythm... and rhythm as a way of organizing sound and playing with other people... It is an essential, necessary and meaningful part of our practice. 

Let's always include a way of practicing with rhythmic integrity (wholeness, state of being whole and undivided) and teaching ourself to feel the rhythm in our body too. As we connect to rhythm in our body, mind and in our practice, also be curious about what is natural, organic in the timing of rhythmic gestures, phrasing and timing? 

Saying the rhythmic phrase aloud away from your instrument may help. 

Dancing or moving to a recording of what you played to see if the rhythm has flow and motion. 

Listening to a recording of yourself and checking if your timing and rhythm are what you thought you played.

Create words for each rhythm then connect them to flow into a phrasing sentence.

Consider the rhythm of the fermatas, rests and silence and how you are expressing each of these in your practice and playing too.
